Finding Inspiration in Nature

If you had a chance to vacation around the Great Lakes area this year, then you probably saw some beautiful natural waterscapes. We are so blessed with the Great Lakes, inland lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands. These places can bring inspiration for creating your own waterscape.

How Does Your Water Garden Grow?

One of the first water features we created at our retail location was "Colorado Falls".

These are twin falls, one ending into a pondless rock bed,

Early Spring

and the other waterfall tumbles and streams under a bridge and into a peaceful koi pond.
Early Spring

We love this beautiful waterscape and have enjoyed developing its features and watching it mature over the years.

Have you heard that a water feature is like a fine wine - it gets better over time? It is definitely true! It settles in and nestles into your landscape, the ecosystem gets better, and of course the plants you choose grow and mature.

Let's take another virtual walk along one half of Colorado Falls, look at the different plantings, and then watch a video to see it in all of its glory.

Planted at the top of the waterfall and along the stream are grasses, lilies and irises. The pictures above were taken in May of this year and the following photos are from this July. (Every season has its own beauty!)

Although these purple irises are now past bloom for the season, their foliage adds texture and color along the stream.

Irises can be planted along the edge of the water feature or bare-rooted in the water itself. Simply spread the roots under the water and cover them with gravel.

Hostas are another favorite that grows beautifully along the water's edge.

Two Japanese Maple trees mark both the beginning and the end of our falls. The top maple is a Crimson Japanese Maple and at the foot of the bridge shading the koi pond is a Bloodspot Japanese Maple. Let's go to the video to see it all.....

We invite you to take a tour of our 2 acres of ponds, fountains and waterfalls, including Colorado Falls, at our Paw Paw, Michigan location. Please visit our website for directions and store hours or give call us at (269) 657-4577.

Water Gardens Walk

Earlier this month Great Lakes Pondscapes hosted a water garden walk. This is the third year for the "Serenity in Water Gardens Walk" and there were six families that opened up their backyards to share their water features in the greater Paw Paw, Michigan area. Come and take a virtual walk......

Hillside Dream
Dave and Jenn had been contemplating what to do with the hillside starting from their upper deck down to the lower patio, when they came to visit our store they immediately knew they wanted to add a waterscape. With gardening being his hobby and having done all of the landscaping around their home, Dave decided to build this 11 x 16 pond himself.
From the upper deck you enjoy the beginning of the waterfall cascading into a winding stream that doubles back down the hillside to the koi pond ending at the patio outside sliding doors to their home. Part of the stream was made to be more of a babbling brook where birds frequently gather to drink and bathe. With the fire pit to enjoy nights sitting by the lighted pond, it is a perfect complement to this beautiful backyard.

Golf Course View
Situated on a beautiful golf course, Tim and Leslie and children in a combined effort put in their own wonderfully landscaped pond. They had seen one at a friend's house and loved the idea. About three years ago they decided to add a second waterfall.

They have landscaped with loads of colorful ground cover among other plantings and a lighted pathway up to the major waterfall.  This pond is decorated with lots of fun garden decor to walk around and look at while enjoying the fish as well. The most unique thing about this pond is the fire pit that is built right into the middle rock area.
They enjoy many relaxing times sitting under their big umbrella enjoying their pond or they can overlook it from their huge back deck.

A Pond in the Woods
This pondscape is our very own! Our home is nestled in a wooded setting, so we made the effort to make the pond with a more rugged, natural look that would complement the grounds.

The waterfall begins between two mature trees and winds down to the pond that can be enjoyed from many sitting areas around the pond, from the deck, wrap-around porch, or the hammock that is the ultimate relaxing spot on a summer afternoon.

Lakeside Waterfall
This lakeside home was enhanced even more by the homeowners vision of waterfalls leading down the hillside and into the lake.

Designed to wrap around a huge existing tree and decorated with a carved granite heron statue, these twin streams provide cascading water sound that the peaceful lake does not.

The homeowners admit they have both fallen asleep on their glider just above the falls on occasion it is so relaxing.

Backyard Habitat

Newly installed just this year, this skillfully designed pondless waterfall adds the sound and beauty that the family was looking for to complete their magnificent backyard habitat that is also a Monarch Way Station, and includes intensive bird stations, gardens and other small water features as well. Having seen water gardens on walks Mary had gone on in the past, she visited our store, walked the grounds, and knew what she wanted someday.

The family is able to enjoy the soothing sounds from their master bedroom, kitchen, as well as their extensive back deck that almost runs the whole length of their house, just sitting back and taking it all in.

Backyard Koi Pond
Jeff and Melanie are huge water garden enthusiast as this beautifully deigned koi pond is the fourth water feature they have done! When they moved into their new home, they had left behind their koi pond and knew they would have one again.

Last year with the help of their son Brian, who works at our store, they outdid themselves with this 3000 gallon pond with a 28ft stream full of wonderful waterfalls and turns throughout. Strategically placed for maximum enjoyment, their family loves the tranquility the water provides and watching the fish, especially at night when lit.
